Originally the plan was to see it first thing in the morning, but we decided to squeeze it in last night after hanging in Arashiyama all day we're only here in Kyoto for days. Sure, the shops and restaurants were all closed, but we did all our shopping and eating in Arashiyama and Nishi the day before, so it was okay. The gates looked beautiful in the dim light and there were no crowds! We hiked all the way up and all the stops were deserted, so it was really fun exploring on our own. It was so quiet and peaceful. We saw a bunch of feral cats and even a wild boar which was kinda scary 😱 And the view of Kyoto all lit up was gorgeous! Just wanted to pass that on in case anyone else wants to go! Edit Actually, when we got there, one of the souvenir stands was just starting to close up shop, so I managed to get a small key chain.
